General Policy
Purpose:
| • | To ensure sustainability is integrated into the destination or venue and execution |

| • | To promote documentation of policies | ||
Activities Implemented:
| 1. | Consider the sustainable qualities of the destination and its relation to the overall objectives of the event and document a policy articulating this |
||
| 2. | Identify suppliers and vendors with a written sustainability policy for its organization including that that specifies the vision, objectives and goals for sustainability. | ||
| 3. | Assign one or more staff members or create an environmental team to be accountable for implementing environmental and sustainability efforts | ||
| 4. | Comply with local laws as the minimum benchmark and where absent or insufficient, be supplemented with adherence to the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact | ||
| 5. | Include clauses in official documents that considers destinations/ venues that a. Provides support and means for electronic communications b. Provides clear waste reduction and waste management systems c. Incorporates energy efficient practices and technologies d. Incorporates water conservation practices in place e. Provides environmentally preferred products and services |

Communications
Purpose:
| • | To encourage and promote adoption of sustainable practices by all stakeholders |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Destination has strong regulatory policy on environmental and sustainability matters |
||
| 2. | Venue provide e-signages as means of marketing and communications | ||
Waste
Purpose:
| • | To reduce energy use and production of greenhouse gases through proper waste handling |
||
| • | To advocate materials management hierarchy for waste in order of the following: o Eliminate waste by reducing material use o Minimise waste through reuse or recycling o Minimise waste through composting o Land filling and combustion or incineration for remaining waste |
||
| • | To manage materials in a sustainable manner that conserves virgin resources that would otherwise serve as raw materials for new products |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Destination and venue have recycling facilities that can recycle at least the basic materials of paper, glass, aluminum and plastics. Recycling process may be carried on-site or through an external provider |

Energy
Purpose:
| • | To reduce use of energy in the operations, and thereby minimize the production of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. |
||
| • | To promote the use of renewable forms of energy |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Destination is an international location served by 70 airlines with direct flights into the city |
||
| 2. | Destination and venue are both supported by renewable energy grids as a percentage of total energy consumption |
||
| 3. | Venue implements “occupancy-based intelligence” programs to enable energy usage to be adjusted according to building occupancy |
||
| 4. | Venue operates adequate scheduled lighting, escalators, lift, air-conditioning and other operational requirements based on accurate schedule of events |
||
| 5. | Venue implements energy efficient lighting systems |
||
Air Quality
Purpose:
| • | To promote improvements in overall air quality |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Destination has a direct rapid transit link between the airport and the convention venue |
||
| 2. | Destination and venue has a neighbourhood supported by conference accommodation within 15-20 minutes of walking distance |
||
| 3. | Destination and venue has smoke-free buildings by-law within its enclosed compound |
||
Water
Purpose:
| • | To optimize the efficient use of water and energy associated with water use |
||
| • | To capture rainwater and grey water for additional use and re-use |
||
| • | To promote conservation of a valuable natural resource |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Destination and venue should monitor drinking water quality |
||
| 2. | Venue uses manual or electric eyes device controls for low flow water devices in a. Faucets (reduction to ½ gallon per minute) b. Toilets (or dual flush toilets, reduction to 1.28 gallons per flush) c. Urinals (or zero flush urinals, reduction to 0 gallons per flush) d. Showerheads (reduction to 1 to 1.5 gallons per minute) |

| 3. | Venue implements an extensive water recycling programme |
||
Procurement
Purpose:
| • | To promote environmental protection through strategic purchasing of sustainable goods and services |
||
Activities:
| 1. | Venue provides options of purchase of environmentally preferred products and services available |
||
Community Partners
Purpose:
| • | To leverage positive host community benefits from events |
||
| • | To commit to volunteering or giving back to the local community |
||
